Teacher Workshop

re: Michael Goldberg Exhibition

University at Buffalo’s Anderson Gallery

Karen is a charismatic, vibrant force who helps her students draw on their own energy and creativity.  With her, so much seems possible. I found myself drawing, collaging and writing poems AFTER, as well as during her classes. Her wonderful array of quotes, images, art materials, and music infiltrated my brain! Karen creates a calm, yet exciting environment in which all her students feel seen, heard, and safe. In each session I took this year, Karen enabled the group to become a community who learned from not only her, but also from each other. We had a wonderful time TOGETHER. Karen is kind, smart, imaginative, responsive and a lot of FUN. What more could you want in a teacher  !                           CG, 2013

Karen is the finest poetry writing instructor I have ever had (and I have had a few!). She prepares meticulously for each class and for the series of classes.  We know where we are going at each point and feel challenged for each next class. She pulls into her curriculum an astonishing variety of sources. It is difficult to avoid being inspired in her classes. This particular class was fascinating as an inquiry into the nature of the human drive for healing, spiritual, emotional wounds as well as physical.   The wonderful poems the class created demonstrated the breadth of the inquiry.  Her method of reviewing class work is also exemplary. Karen is extremely kind, so people fee free to share and to be vulnerable. MORE CLASSES WITH KAREN, PLEASE!                  AR, 2013

Karen Lewis has been working with me for over two years as a writing tutor.  She has  inspired my writing and offered supportive critical response.  She is a wise, sensitive coach who succeeds in calling out one's best writing efforts. I would most enthusiastically recommend her work.       LD, 2012
